The Kannada Konnection

The post comes at a time when The Kannada Sahitya Sammelana is happening and we are happily sitting at home enjoying a holiday which is actually given for us to visit it.Some of us will scoff at it,some will go and truly enjoy and the rest will not bother about it at all.Not that any of them is wrong as there might not be the interest or the facility to go.Still some might assert that not going will not mean that they aren't 'true Kannadigas at heart'.

This post might come as a surprise from someone who is a Kannadiga and still doesn't very well know how to write(Highlighted by the fact that I got a B grade in Kannada). I am ashamed to admit this unlike a few who think it is 'cool'.And yet I am not angry with the examiners as this can be considered a punishment, a shame.A few might criticize me for having such 'antiquated' thoughts (Not that I really care about it..).But this triggered in me a thought about the various issues circling our language which will surely become extinct if necessary steps are not taken.
So what deters the learning of Kannada??Why is that many people who are Kannadigas ( or having stayed in Karnataka all their lives) don't feel the necessity to learn the language. The major reason according to me is that we feel that when things are getting done without it,there is no use.Bangalore being a cosmopolitan city, any localite will respond if you question them in English,Hindi or Tamil(yes..a huge population in the city knows Tamil).
Next factor is the schools.Given the fact that we have a large number of CBSE and ICSE schools most of which do not even offer it as an optional language at any level.KVs which constitute a major chunk can't do it as in any state any local language is not offered. Some others like DPS might also have something of this sort as they are throughout India. But the rest which are local ones have NO valid reason other than disinterest.(Sorry if the institution you studied in comes under this category). In Tamil Nadu I have heard that it is compulsory for all the schools irrespective of the board to offer Tamil. In case some argues saying it can be learnt at home they must know how difficult it is to coach the child at home during holidays while he/she wants to enjoy. The rest of the academic year is jam packed!
There are so many more reasons that any expert will be able to offer you or you can figure it out yourselves.
What pains me the most is that the pride of being a Kannadiga is diminishing. We are all to blame. We simply have to appreciate the steps taken by other states to ensure that their language remains strong and healthy. We need to do a lot more and I am hopeful that the government will do something.
Thankfully all is not so bleak. There is still a ray of hope. There is a population however minute that is active in promoting the language.I remember in class 5 (that is when I came to Bangalore) we had 2 teachers who took up the responsibility to teach written Kannada to students voluntarily. There was no support from the Institution. Many of us happily jumped in including some non Kannadigas. They did succeed to conduct classes for about 2 months or so and after that they found it taxing. And we being kids were extremely naughty.I didn't manage to learn anything more than a few letters but still I laud their efforts.
Also in the college where I am presently studying, there is a very strong Kannada sangha. It is one of the best managed club on the campus with a good bunch of Kannada enthusiastic youth.Their annual fest "Jhenkara - 2010" completely floored me.

There are Kannada blogs, articles in Wikipedia and lots more!!This might give us high hopes. Also we need to remember that Bangalore is NOT Karnataka. The rest of the state still respects it and it has a strong foothold.
Dear Kannada..all is not well but that doesn't mean all is lost!Everything's gonna be alright!:)

  3. Cool post!

I guess there's a price one pays for globalization...I saw a cartoon recently in which kannada was depicted as a small island in a large sea of glogalization, with one guy on the island screaming "Save kannada!"..

  4. Off topic:

There WAS no neccessity for globalisation the way we have it now. Like China we could have all policies with nation's interest at its centre, unlike opening our markets for everyone. It is so easy for foreigners to come and mine here or open their supermarkets. But for an Indian even to have a legal small scale pickle industry, u need to struggle so much with lot of bribing. Nehru never supported inland liberalisation, which being not there is the reason for all the havoc. Sadly, even today the INC principles discourages this.

AND you have hardly any English in China, plus all dialects are equally respected. This is not due to economic deals, thus.

  5. I think not tuning up for sammelana doesnt mean the person hates kannada. may be the person isnt interested in literature in general.

  6. yes it doesnt mean so. But its a misconception to associate it with literature because it has that word. Actually apart from book exhibition, you DONT have novel releases or reading stories etc. This year alone for public interest poem reading and singing is organised. The meet discusses and enlists the needs for kannada, along with taking oaths. It was started as a Nudihabba, a festival for the language for people all over the state to gather. ashte. Sahitya is an unnecessary add-on for the book exhibition. lol

  7. wonderful post! :) well i actually didnt go to the kannada sammelana..even though i had come near tht place yday!..i thought i had genuine reasons for tht..but then after reading ur post im really feeling guilty 4 not having gone there! :(
but i did watch it on tv[just saying..it still doesnt save me from the guilt of not going]...and gosh!! shame on our politicians!!..the way they were speaking..even while reading out from speeches which have been written 4 them!!ok..v cant expect every1 to be scholars, but they shd atleast try to avoid blatant mistakes..esp in an occasion lik this!!
and loved sri's analogy of ganesha festival 2!!helped enhance my guilt! :P

  8. i know sri. but still a person like me who loves kannada might not be interested in going there.
i did read prof.GV talking abt preserving kannada..n believe me...i'm helping my non kannadiga friends learn a bit of kannada.

  9. @harish..well I didn't mean that as i have clearly stated.Nd for everybody's information..this sammelana was hardly organised. The speeches lacked quality and they were all blowing their own trumpet (mostly). So nobody needs to feel guilty about it!!:)
We are all discussing the major problems faced by our language..I appreciate everyone's efforts and I hope we can do something more...

  10. For the record, a language grows also because of the increasing quality of works in that language, quality increasing or atleast being high as time passes. Cinema, music, novels, all count! While I know for sure that the first two are hardly qualify for kannada, the last would matter if the first two were all right...to the common man I mean.

  11. Due to reasons unknown our cinema makers cater only to the front benches which is why they're all flopping. Its really sad as they have lots of competition, maximum no. of people watch bollywood (not that it has any great quality..only a few score)esp in the multiplexes. This is where a cinema cashes in.Coming to the novels part..there is excellent quality out there(if not new..old) and it is under utilised.Only if our cinema makers would make some movies from these, the popularity and the love for the language will grow!

  12. hey very good writeup Raksha :)
i totally agree that this sahtiya sammelana was not that good compared to the previous sammelanas.

I have attended till now four sammelanas Bangalore being the fourth one .. first was mandya, then tumkur ..n chitradurga..

Here i could see many kannadigas come out with great enthusiasm n cheering and supporting for the event which is going on.

Especially when it comes the issue of Bangalore its not a good sign that people not attending the event. The anchors in the event they were so disinterested in the event as they were announcing the events in such a weird manner n was not systematic too.
This would have been good if there was good political unity n common interest among common people .

Kannada movies, its so deviated from the original kannada sahitya to the slang version of it which is influencd on people n is becoming increasingly popular.

The youths have to develop the interest towards the Kannada literature so that it stands for long n stays the way it is.

    u can also add Kuvempus's

"Elladaru iru Enthadaru iru Endendigu nee Kannadavagiru.. Kannadave satya-Kannadave nitya"

  13. thank u!!:)..true it doesn't send out a good message 2 non kanadigas about our unity but thinking of political unity is like a utopian vision!!
for creating interest the best places are schools.next come parents.as for cinema..that is not under our control so nothing much can be done about it!:(
